Timeline of Ecorse Public Library

A Legacy of Learning: The History of Ecorse Public Library

The roots of the Ecorse Public Library trace back to 1922, when a small collection of books—courtesy of the Wayne County Library Service—was placed at Loveland’s Pharmacy. In 1923, the pharmacy relocated to a larger space, and the owner generously dedicated a portion of the new building to library use. Although limited space forced the service to pause in 1925, the community’s thirst for knowledge endured.

On March 22, 1926, the library found its first true home in the DeWallot building, beginning with 600 volumes and a renewed sense of purpose. By 1929, the growing library boasted four staff members and extended its reach through two additional branches—one in the Ecorse Municipal Building and another on Visger Road.

The story reached a defining chapter on December 12, 1948, when the current Ecorse Public Library was formally opened and dedicated by Mayor William Vosine. Designed by Dearborn architects Bennett and Straight and constructed from durable stone and brick, the building was built to be fireproof and cost $150,000—including equipment. Funded through wartime savings earmarked for post-war improvements, the library stood as a beacon of civic pride and forward-thinking.

The American Library Association recognized the facility as one of the finest small libraries in the nation. Its main floor welcomed both adults and children in thoughtfully designated sections, while the basement housed a community auditorium. Dignitaries from across the county and state gathered for its dedication, marking a moment that celebrated not only a building but the enduring value of public knowledge.
